Kris Kleindienst

I am co-owner, with my life partner Jarek Steele, of Left Bank Books in St. Louis, MO, where I have worked since 1974. I am also a (fairly inactive) writer and wrote a column for the local LGBT newspaper for many years. I conceived and edited a collection of essays by activists called This Is What Lesbian Looks Like, published by Firebrand Press in 2000, which won a Lambda Literary Award.

I love reading novels best. I write what Francisco Goldman would call “prose”, preferring to categorize it as “not poetry”. I like to cook, garden, run, and travel, although I do these things less and less. I live with two dogs, two cats, a yard full of sparrows, Jarek, and when our sons are with us, 18 and 13 year old young men.

My social activism at this point is reduced to a focused battle to save literature, the arts, and social discourse through keeping my own bookstore alive and advocating for various fair trade practices and business policies that would encourage a free press.
